James L. Wilson

Elizabeth Wilson

Owner/Builder

The fact that you are reading this right now means that I have

outplayed, outsmarted and outlasted numerous obstacles -

I am a survivor!!

It all started many years ago when I became interested in

alternative construction such as underground, geodesic dome,

rammed earth, straw bale, etc. You might think it's crazy to build

a house out of old, worn out tires, aluminum cans and bottles -

garbage, essentially - and you should have seen the look on my

wife's face when I told her that was what I wanted to do!!

Well, after researching all that I could about Earthships, my wife

and I attended one of Michael Reynolds'  seminars in Taos, New

Mexico, for some hands-on experience. Two years later, we

returned to stay for three days and two nights in the very same

Earthship I had worked on. After that stay, we were convinced that

we wanted to build our own Earthship, and the rest is now history

in the making.

Though I've been down many a winding road coordinating with

the architect and toughing-out the many challenges our project

has posed to Pima County building officials, I couldn't be more

thrilled that our Earthship is finally going to "land" on our beautiful

site in Southwest Tucson. So, here we are - about to begin the

adventure of a lifetime!!

All along the way, I have also been driven to share my excitement

with our Tucson community and to raise and inspire awareness

of responsible, green alternatives for living. And now, we invite you

to join us on our journey as we build this amazing structure - and

help us to...

!! TURN THE DESERT GREEN ONE EARTHSHIP AT A TIME !!

Francis M. Massland

LEED Accredited Construction Consultant

Owner - Maasland, LLC

I was raised in the Netherlands, where "green" living occurred as

a natural response to the lack of resources available after WWII.

From my perspective, "green" building had always been

available, and it was something I actually took for granted until

I joined a family contracting firm in New York City in 1984.

At that point, I became increasingly aware of the large amount of

waste produced by the construction industry, and how our

industrialized society would soon be aware of its negative impact

on daily living and housing. I have since focused my career on

returning to the more positive, grass-roots concepts that I once

took for granted, by fostering awareness and practices that will

carry us into a more responsible future in building.

Earthships have evolved into sophisticated buildings, and we

need to lay the foundation to incorporate them into normal and

accepted building practice. The sustainability side of Earthship

construction is huge; as we recycle thousands of tires and other

local materials into structural building material, we will be taking

a progressive step in the right direction toward reducing waste.

I believe we need to take this obvious step forward and return to

the grass-roots of responsible building design. As a board

member of Tucson's USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council)

chapter, active participant on Habitat's Home & Community

Design Committee, and co-owner of Desert Green Builders,

I strive to offer many levels of "green" building expertise to anyone

who agrees that a more energy-efficient, sustainable and healthy

environment is not only beneficial, but necessary.

As Construction Consultant on the Arizona Earthship project,

I am inspired by my own roots in helping the Wilsons realize their

own "green" dream, while passionately paving the way toward

smarter and healthier living alternatives for all Tucsonans.

About Us...

Earthships are constructed of mostly recycled materials like

automobile tires, glass bottles and aluminum soda cans.

Earthships catch water from the sky and re-use it up to four

times to flush toilets and feed indoor gardens and outdoor

landscaping.

Water is heated by solar or natural gas sources, but public water
sources can be tapped for backup and for potable drinking water.

Earthships contain and treat all household sewage in indoor and outdoor botanical cells that feed food gardens and outdoor landscaping.

Earthship toilets flush with filtered grey water.

Indoor “wetlands” provide balanced humidity and a constant supply

of fresh air.

Electricity can be produced naturally from solar and wind, or combined with other sources such as gas-powered generators or public-grid provided power.

Earthships use the sun and thermal mass construction to maintain
comfortable temperatures year-round in any climate.
